What Is the Fool's Journey?
The Fool's Journey is a symbolic way of understanding the twenty two cards of the Major Arcana. Rather than seeing them as separate images, they are viewed as one continuous journey of personal and spiritual development.
The Fool, numbered 0, represents limitless potential. He stands at the beginning of life, carrying only a small bundle and an open heart. He has no expectations and no fear because he has not yet experienced either success or failure.
He simply trusts.
As he progresses through the Major Arcana, he encounters mentors, rulers, lovers, challenges, loss, transformation and enlightenment. Every figure he meets represents an aspect of human experience and ultimately, an aspect of himself. By the time he reaches The World, he has not become perfect. Instead, he has become whole.
That is perhaps the greatest lesson of tarot.
The History Behind the Fool's Journey
Interestingly, the idea of the Fool's Journey was not part of the earliest tarot decks. The first tarot cards appeared in fifteenth century Italy as beautifully illustrated playing cards for the nobility. Over time, these images became associated with mysticism, philosophy, psychology and spiritual exploration.
The concept of the Fool's Journey developed much later, particularly during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, when occult scholars and tarot authors began interpreting the Major Arcana as a sequence of spiritual initiation.
They recognised that the cards could be read as one unfolding narrative, with the Fool acting as the seeker moving through each stage of human development.
Today, this interpretation has become one of the most widely loved ways of understanding tarot because it speaks to something universal. Regardless of culture, age or background, we all embark on our own journeys of discovery.
The Fool's path is not just his story.
It is our story.
Why the Major Arcana Matters
There are seventy eight cards in a tarot deck. Fifty six belong to the Minor Arcana, representing the ordinary experiences of daily life. The remaining twenty-two cards form the Major Arcana. These cards appear when life is asking something significant of us. They often indicate periods of profound change, spiritual awakening, important decisions or life-defining events.
When several Major Arcana cards appear in a reading, it often suggests that you are moving through an important chapter in your personal journey.
Rather than focusing on what happens next, the Major Arcana asks a deeper question:
Who are you becoming?
This is why the Fool's Journey remains such a powerful framework for understanding tarot. It reminds us that every challenge, every triumph and every transformation contributes to the person we are continually becoming.
The Fool
The Leap of Faith
The Fool stands at the edge of a cliff, one foot is already lifted.
Behind him lies everything he has ever known, ahead of him stretches infinite possibility.
Many traditional illustrations show him accompanied by a small white dog, symbolising loyalty, instinct and protection. The dog appears to bark, perhaps warning him of the cliff's edge, or perhaps encouraging him to continue.
The Fool listens not with logic but with hope.
He trusts the journey before understanding where it will lead.

Card I, The Magician
Discovering Your Own Power
After taking his first step into the unknown, the Fool encounters the Magician. Unlike the Fool, who possesses unlimited potential without direction, the Magician understands exactly how to channel energy into creation.
Before him rest the symbols of the four tarot suits:
- The Pentacle (Earth)
- The Sword (Air)
- The Wand (Fire)
- The Cup (Water)
Together they represent every aspect of human experience.
The Magician teaches that we already possess everything necessary to build the life we imagine. Sometimes we simply forget. His raised wand points toward heaven while his other hand points to the earth, symbolising the connection between inspiration and action.
Dreams alone accomplish nothing.
Action brings them into reality.

Card II, The High Priestess
The Wisdom of Silence
The Fool's next teacher speaks very little. The High Priestess represents intuition, mystery and the hidden world beyond ordinary perception. She sits quietly between two pillars, guarding sacred knowledge that cannot be learned from books alone.
Where the Magician teaches action, the High Priestess teaches stillness. She reminds us that our inner voice often speaks most clearly when the outside world becomes quiet.
- Dreams.
- Meditation.
- Instinct.
- Synchronicity.
These become her language.
Modern life encourages constant movement, endless information and continual distraction.
The High Priestess gently asks us to pause...

Card III, The Empress
Life in Full Bloom
Emerging from the quiet sanctuary of the High Priestess, the Fool enters the abundant world of the Empress. She is Mother Earth, the Divine Feminine, the fertile landscape where ideas become reality and love becomes nourishment.
Fields of wheat, flowing rivers, blooming flowers and lush forests frequently surround her, reminding us that nature never rushes, yet everything unfolds in perfect time.
The Empress teaches the Fool that life flourishes when we nurture what truly matters.
She encourages creativity in all its forms.
- Painting.
- Writing.
- Gardening.
- Music.
- Cooking.
- Creating a home.
- Building meaningful relationships.
Everything created with love carries the Empress's energy.

Card IV, The Emperor
Building Strong Foundations
Having experienced creativity and abundance, the Fool now meets the Emperor. If the Empress is flowing water, the Emperor is solid stone. He represents stability, leadership, discipline and responsibility.
The Emperor understands that inspiration alone is not enough, dreams require structure, goals require commitment. Success is built one careful step at a time.
He teaches the Fool that boundaries are not limitations, they are the framework that allows life to flourish.
- Healthy routines.
- Honest leadership.
- Integrity.
- Responsibility.
These become the foundations upon which lasting achievements are built.
The Empress and Emperor are not opposites. Together they demonstrate one of tarot's greatest truths:
Life requires both softness and strength.

Continuing The Journey...
By this point, the Fool has learned trust, discovered his own potential, awakened his intuition, embraced creativity and begun building firm foundations for the life ahead.
Yet his greatest lessons are still to come.
In the next stage of the journey, he will encounter spiritual teachers, life-changing choices, determination, courage and solitude as he meets The Hierophant, The Lovers, The Chariot, Strength and The Hermit. Each encounter will shape the person he is becoming and perhaps reveal something about your own journey too.
The Fool's Journey Is Learning Through Life
Card V, The Hierophant
Wisdom Passed Through Generations.
As the Fool continues his journey, he meets a respected teacher seated between ancient pillars. This is the Hierophant, guardian of tradition, sacred knowledge and spiritual guidance. The Hierophant reminds us that while every journey is unique, we do not have to walk it alone. There is immense value in learning from those who have travelled the path before us. Teachers, mentors, elders and spiritual traditions all have wisdom to share, helping us avoid unnecessary pitfalls and deepening our understanding of ourselves.
For many tarot readers, this card also represents the rich history of tarot itself. The symbolism within the cards has evolved over centuries, passed from artist to artist, reader to reader, each generation adding its own perspective while honouring timeless archetypes.
The Fool learns humility.
There is strength in asking questions, in listening with an open heart and in recognising that true wisdom is a lifelong pursuit.

Card VI, The Lovers

Although often associated with romance, The Lovers represents something even deeper, this card is about meaningful choice. The Fool stands at a crossroads where every decision shapes the future. Love is certainly one expression of this card, but so too are choices about career, friendships, personal values and the direction of one's life.
Every choice asks a question:
"Does this align with who I truly am?"
The Lovers teaches that authenticity requires courage. Choosing the easy path is rarely the same as choosing the right path. Healthy relationships, whether romantic, familial or platonic all flourish when built upon honesty, respect and shared values.
For tarot readers, this card reminds us that every decision creates a new chapter in our own Fool's Journey.

Card VII, The Chariot

Often depicted driving a magnificent chariot pulled by two contrasting creatures, the card reminds us that success depends upon balancing opposing forces rather than allowing them to pull us apart.
Within each of us exist competing emotions:
- Hope and doubt.
- Confidence and fear.
- Logic and intuition.
The Chariot teaches that progress comes from bringing these forces into harmony.
Life's greatest achievements are rarely accomplished overnight. They require perseverance, focus and the determination to continue even when the destination seems distant.

Card VIII, Strength
Courage Wears a Gentle Face
Many people imagine strength as power or dominance, Tarot offers a different perspective. Strength is often portrayed as a calm figure gently closing the jaws of a lion, not through force, but through compassion, patience and trust.
The Fool discovers that real courage is quiet.
It is the courage to forgive.
To remain kind when life has been unkind.
To persevere through illness, grief or disappointment.
To speak gently when anger feels easier.
This card reminds us that emotional resilience is often far greater than physical power.
The lion symbolises our instincts, fears and passions. Rather than suppressing them, Strength teaches us to work alongside them with understanding and balance.

Card IX, The Hermit

Eventually every traveller reaches a point where the noise of the world becomes overwhelming. The Fool withdraws from the crowds and meets the Hermit, holding a single lantern high against the darkness, the Hermit symbolises introspection, contemplation and inner wisdom.
He is not lonely.
He is alone with purpose.
Modern society often encourages constant productivity, endless communication and continual distraction. The Hermit offers something profoundly different.
- Silence.
- Reflection.
- Stillness.
Within his lantern burns the light of self-knowledge, he reminds us that many of life's greatest answers cannot be found by looking outward. They emerge only when we are willing to look within. As Gautama the Buddha said, "The way is not in the sky, the way is in the heart"
For many tarot practitioners, time spent journalling, meditating or simply walking in nature embodies the wisdom of the Hermit.

After a period of quiet reflection, the Fool encounters the ever turning Wheel of Fortune.
- Life is movement.
- Seasons change.
- Relationships evolve.
- Fortunes rise and fall.
Nothing remains exactly as it is forever.
The Wheel reminds us that change is neither reward nor punishment, it is simply part of life's natural rhythm.
Moments of joy eventually pass.
Moments of hardship also pass.
Understanding this truth allows us to appreciate life's blessings while remaining hopeful during difficult times.
For many readers, this card is a comforting reminder that even when circumstances seem beyond our control, every ending creates the possibility of a new beginning.

Card XI, Justice
Living with Integrity
The Fool now encounters Justice, who sits calmly holding balanced scales in one hand and a sword in the other. Justice is not concerned with punishment, she is concerned with truth.

Every choice creates a ripple.
Justice asks us to take responsibility for our lives rather than blaming circumstance or fate. Integrity means acting according to our deepest values, even when no one else is watching.
This card encourages honesty, with others, but most importantly with ourselves.

Card XII, The Hanged Man
The Gift of a Different Perspective
To the Fool's surprise, progress suddenly comes to a halt. The Hanged Man hangs peacefully upside down, suggesting surrender rather than struggle.
Sometimes life asks us not to push harder, but to pause... To be.
Waiting can be deeply uncomfortable, especially in a world that celebrates constant achievement. Yet periods of uncertainty often become the birthplace of profound insight.
By viewing life from a different perspective, the Fool begins to recognise opportunities that were previously hidden.
- Patience becomes a teacher.
- Stillness becomes productive.
- Surrender becomes strength.

Card XIII, Death
Transformation, Endings and New Beginnings
Few tarot cards inspire more unnecessary fear than Death.
Despite its dramatic imagery, this card rarely signifies physical death.
Instead, it symbolises one of life's greatest truths:
- Everything changes.
- Old identities fade.
- Careers end.
- Relationships evolve.
- Beliefs transform.
The Fool learns that holding onto what no longer serves him only prevents new life from emerging.
Just as autumn leaves must fall before spring can arrive, personal growth often begins with letting go. Death clears away what has become outdated, making room for renewal.
In many ways Death is one of the most hopeful cards in the entire Major Arcana. Because it reminds us that endings are never truly endings, they are doorways to new beginnings.
Every meaningful transformation requires courage.
Every new chapter begins by closing another.
