Life Spirit Team

Life Spirit Team set out to bring the Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot into the physical world, staging every scene with real people and photographing it on film.

Four people lead Life Spirit Team. Denis Dyshlovenko is the photographer, with more than fifteen years in film photography and optical printing behind him. Anastasia Dyshlovenko, a certified tarologist and Kundalini yoga instructor, guided the esoteric side of the deck. Sofia Karulina, an actress and model, was art director for the staged scenes. Vladimir Kamchits, an artist and designer, handled the branding, illustrations and print layout.

The Amber Tarot is 78 cards in which real people, real costumes, real props and real locations recreate the familiar Rider-Waite-Smith imagery. By the team's own account it took more than 100 people, 70 costumes and 92 photoshoots over three months, with smoke machines on set rather than digital mist and a tent city built for the Seven of Swords. Every card was shot on analogue colour film without Photoshop, computer graphics or artificial intelligence. Because the imagery stays so close to Rider-Waite-Smith, you can learn it from almost any traditional guidebook, which is why we recommend it to beginners.

The cards are classic tarot size on 400gsm stock with a smooth varnish, printed in Italy, in a lidded box with a silk-feel lamination and a printed booklet of card meanings. We send it from the UK.

How to choose between them

Who made the Amber Tarot?
Life Spirit Team: Denis Dyshlovenko behind the camera, Anastasia Dyshlovenko on the tarot, Sofia Karulina as art director and Vladimir Kamchits on design and print.
Is the Amber Tarot photographed or illustrated?
It is photographed on film. Real people, costumes, props and locations were staged for every card, with no Photoshop, computer graphics or AI.
Is it a good first deck?
It is. The deck follows the Rider-Waite-Smith imagery closely enough that almost any traditional guidebook works alongside it. One difference to know: The Fool is numbered 22 rather than 0.
