Madhouse Tarot: An Occult Deck Built on the Kabbalistic Tree of Life
Madhouse Tarot is a 78-card hand-drawn occult tarot deck by Eugene Vinitski and Elsa Khapatnukovski of Tarotmania, built on concepts developed within the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.
The deck follows the traditional structure of 22 Major Arcana and 56 Minor Arcana, with the Minor Arcana divided into the four suits of Wands, Cups, Swords and Coins. In the Major Arcana, the imagery traces the paths between the Sephirah on the Kabbalistic Tree of Life. The 22 paths correspond to the letters of the Hebrew alphabet assigned to each card. The Minor Arcana draws on the seals of the Goetia demons, read here as hidden parts of the personality: doubt, disappointment, fear and anxiety. The Court cards depict outstanding historical visionaries rather than traditional royalty, chosen for their singularity and their capacity to advance the world from the edge of reason.
Each card is full of metaphor, speaking figuratively to a person's behaviour at some degree of extremeness. The deck works well as a diagnostic tool in projective tests, or combined with group therapeutic processes such as psychodrama, systemic constellations and gestalt therapy. Its archetypal imagery makes it equally suited to metaphorical associative card work: understanding what is happening, finding a way through a situation, or simply speaking a feeling aloud.
This edition was printed in April 2025, with 1000 copies of this print run (4200 copies of Madhouse Tarot printed in total to date).
